Social Media Coordinator Job at TRANS EMPOWERMENT PROJECT, Chicago, IL

  • TRANS EMPOWERMENT PROJECT
  • Chicago, IL

Job Description

Help make sure our social media actually feels social.

Social media is one of the biggest ways people discover Trans Empowerment Project, learn about our programs, join our campaigns, donate, volunteer, and stay connected to our work, but we're not interested in posting just to keep the algorithm gods appeased.

We're looking for volunteer Social Media Coordinators who can help us create thoughtful, engaging content that gives people a reason to stop scrolling, pay attention, participate, and come back.

You'll work closely with TEP's communications team, program leads, and creative volunteers to help plan and manage our day-to-day social media presence — from figuring out what we're posting next week to celebrating a great comment section to looking back at the numbers and asking, Okay, why did THAT post absolutely take off?

What You'll Do

Help Build Our Content Calendar

There's always something happening at TEP. Your job will help us turn all of that activity into a communications plan that makes sense. You'll:

  • Work with TEP's communications team and program leads to identify upcoming campaigns, events, programs, resources, fundraising opportunities, and important organizational updates.
  • Help build and maintain our social media content calendar.
  • Plan a healthy mix of educational, promotional, fundraising, community-focused, and engagement content.
  • Identify gaps and opportunities in our calendar instead of waiting until Tuesday morning to realize we have absolutely nothing scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
  • Help make sure our different programs and campaigns are represented without overwhelming our audience with constant asks.

Create & Schedule Content

You'll help take ideas from "we should post about this" to an actual finished post. Depending on the project, that might mean:

  • Writing social media copy and captions in TEP's established voice.
  • Adapting content for different social platforms and audiences.
  • Creating simple social graphics.
  • Working with volunteer Graphic Designers when a post or campaign needs more substantial visual design.
  • Gathering links, program information, calls to action, and other materials needed for posts.
  • Scheduling approved content through TEP's social media management tools.
  • Proofreading and quality-checking posts before they go live.
  • Helping ensure content is accessible, including adding alt text and considering readability when preparing posts.

Engage With Our Community

Posting is only half the job. We want our social media accounts to feel like there's an actual organization — and actual humans — on the other side of the screen.

You'll help:

  • Monitor comments, mentions, messages, and other interactions.
  • Respond to straightforward questions and help people find the right TEP programs, resources, or information.
  • Engage thoughtfully with supporters and community members.
  • Identify questions or situations that need to be escalated to TEP staff.
  • Help moderate comments when necessary, according to TEP's community standards.
  • Spot opportunities to join relevant conversations and build relationships with aligned organizations, creators, and community members.

You won't be expected to argue endlessly with trolls or personally handle sensitive situations. We'll provide guidance about what you can answer, what should be escalated, and when the correct communications strategy is simply walking away.

Help Us Learn What's Working

We don't want to measure success by vibes alone. You'll help us regularly look at social media performance and answer questions like:

  • What content are people actually engaging with?
  • What are they sharing?
  • What gets people talking?
  • What drives people to click, sign up, donate, or take another action?
  • Which topics and formats consistently perform well?
  • What's falling flat?
  • Are there patterns in timing, format, platform, or messaging that we should pay attention to?
  • What should we try differently next month?

You'll help track key metrics, identify standout content, and share useful insights with the communications team so we're continuously improving instead of repeating the same strategy forever because "that's how we've always done it."

You Might Be a Great Fit If You...

  • Spend enough time on social media to understand how people actually use it.
  • Are a strong writer who can be informative, conversational, funny, serious, urgent, or celebratory depending on what the moment calls for.
  • Understand that writing for social media is different from writing an essay, press release, or corporate announcement.
  • Have some previous experience managing social media, creating digital content, or communicating on behalf of an organization, campaign, business, community, or project.
  • Have good judgment and know when you're comfortable answering something — and when you should grab someone else.
  • Can stay organized and keep track of content, deadlines, approvals, and moving pieces.
  • Enjoy interacting with people online and helping build genuine community.
  • Are comfortable looking at basic analytics and using them to make decisions.
  • Can work independently while communicating proactively with a remote team.
  • Care deeply about trans communities and share TEP's commitment to racial, disability, economic, and gender justice.

Experience with social media management platforms such as Metricool, Hootsuite, Buffer, Sprout Social, Later, or similar tools is helpful, but not required. We'll teach you the platforms and workflows TEP uses.

About the Experience We're Looking For

You don't need to be a professional social media manager with years of agency experience to be successful here.

Maybe you've managed social media for a student organization, nonprofit, political campaign, small business, mutual aid project, Twitch community, community organization, or your own successful project. Maybe communications was only one part of another role.

We're primarily looking for people who can show us that they understand social media as a communications tool , can write effectively for digital audiences, have good judgment, and are excited to learn.

We can teach you our scheduling tools, internal processes, brand guidelines, and analytics systems.

What we can't teach quite as easily is curiosity, creativity, passion, and good instincts.

Time Commitment

Approximately 3–5 hours per week , with flexible scheduling.

Because social media doesn't operate exclusively between 9 and 5, there may occasionally be opportunities to help with timely posts or engagement outside your usual schedule. We don't expect volunteers to be permanently online or constantly available.

During major TEP campaigns and events, volunteers who want to take on additional hours or responsibilities are welcome to do so.

What Success Looks Like

A successful Social Media Coordinator helps us build a presence where:

  • Our content feels unmistakably like TEP.
  • People understand what we do and how they can get involved.
  • Programs and campaigns receive thoughtful, coordinated promotion.
  • Our community feels like we're actually talking with them instead of constantly broadcasting at them.
  • Questions receive helpful responses and people can find the information they need.
  • Our content calendar is intentional rather than reactive.
  • Strong-performing content informs what we create next.
  • Our team understands what's working, what's not, and what we want to experiment with next.

Ultimately, we're not chasing followers for the sake of having a bigger number on a screen. We want social media to help people find TEP, understand TEP, trust TEP, and become part of the community we're building.
